SKILLS: Ability to work independently, good working knowledge of substance abuse treatment approaches, ability to relate well to people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. REQUIREMENTS: Clean New York State driver's license with no moving violations within the last two years, personal vehicle required. Ability to pass biennial physical. LINE RELATIONSHIP: The Substance Use Educator reports to the Parent Education Director. BASIC FUNCTION: Provide education, support and assistance to families with drug and alcohol addictions to improve family functioning and stability. SPECIFIC REPONSIBILITIES: After receiving case referral from the Parent Education Director, review referral and background with caseworker; At initial meeting with parent, actively participate and contribute to development of an agreement between parent and caseworker to address drug and alcohol addictions; agreement will establish and prioritize actions to be taken including: establishing relationship with drug and alcohol addiction treatment provider, keeping regular appointments with provider; complying with drug court orders; recognizing triggers for substance abuse; developing alternative coping strategies; understand effects of addiction on family dynamics and children's well-being; understand thoroughly goals and objective established between parent, Substance Use Educator, and caseworker; establish schedule of visits with parent in conformity with terms of agreement; using resources and assistance of Child and Family Development Division programs, prepare materials, plans an approach for each visit based on goals and objectives established in agreement; Encourage positive interactions between parents and children and reinforce development of healthy family dynamic; Become familiar with guidelines for the reporting of incidents of suspected child abuse or maltreatment and act accordingly as a mandated reporter, in contacting the State Central Register to report such incidents; Complete logs and maintain documentation relative to each visit, monitor progress toward established goals and objectives and submit to Parent Education Director by the established deadline; Complete and submit accurate time and mileage logs to the Parent Education Director in a timely manner; Maintain regular contact with the Parent Education Director pertaining to changes in caseload or schedule of visits, progress made toward objectives, problems and successes; Maintain confidentiality concerning all matters related to cases both current and past. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled at Delaware Opportunities, Inc., 35430 State Highway 10, Hamden, NY 13782 Equal Employment Opportunity M/ F/ Disability/ Protected Veteran Status

Minimum Education
High school diploma; and/or Experience: One year's experience working with individuals with drug and alcohol addictions.
