The Weatherization Program is administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal to improve energy efficiency and reduce heating costs for low-income households, including elderly individuals and persons with disabilities.
Typical weatherization measures may include adding insulation and air sealing to help reduce drafts and keep the home more energy efficient. Each home’s heating system is tested for safety and efficiency. If a furnace is found to be unsafe, inoperable, or unable to be improved through standard efficiency measures, repair or replacement may be considered; however, this is determined on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed. The heat distribution system is also evaluated.
In addition to heating-related improvements, the program may help reduce overall energy use through measures such as replacing inefficient light bulbs, installing low-flow showerheads, addressing hot water heater efficiency concerns, and implementing other cost-effective energy-saving improvements as appropriate for the home.
Eligibility for the Weatherization program is based on the gross income level of the family, and is annually established at 60% of the median family income. Click on the attachment below for current income guidelines.
